- First Grade – Second Grade
- SOLs: 1.7.b, 2.5.b
- The student will demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction.
- First Grade: Focus on adding and subtracting numbers from 0 up to 10.
- Second Grade: Focus on adding and subtracting numbers from 0 up to 20.
- Two pieces of paper
- plastic baggie or paper clip
Step 1: Take two pieces of paper and draw a matching set of circles on each of the two sheets. These should be big enough to write easy to read equations.
Step 2: Take into consideration what your child’s math level and skills they need to work on or just practice. In other words, they shouldn’t go through it super fast but not difficult and frustrating either.
“The goal of this activity is to obtain better fluency in addition and subtraction equations.”
Step 3: Using a marker (for easy and fun reading) write down the addition and/or subtraction equations on the first sheet (without the answers). These can be as simple or as difficult as you would like.
Step 4: On the second sheet write the answers in the corresponding circles. Then cut out these circles from the second page with the scissors. Use a paper clip or plastic bag to keep these. (If you have multiple kids with different sheets consider having them initial the backs of the circles or color-coding the sheets in case a piece gets lost).
Step 1: Set up the equations sheet. Then, mix up the circles with the answers on them.
Step 2: Solve the equations and find the circle with the answer. Place the answer on the circle with the matching equation.
Step 3: Check your answers with a partner or adult. You did it!
